TUNES // They Hate Change – Voice

I love when production can be described as billowing. When the song is a story playing out against a backdrop of gathering clouds. It is swirling and impenetrable, a superbly maximalist take on minimalism.

As it goes on, everything gets tighter, is pulled together like a knot. Any excess becomes lean and necessary. Spare clacks and syllables are gathered magnetically into a current flowing molten and unstoppable.

It’s what makes the end so disarming, when it opens up, and the going gets to its destination very suddenly. The electricity dissipates and the sky clears, goes from a steely grayness to something spread out and pink and undefinable.
