I saw a party in a vacant lot around the block last night. Not even in the lot, really, but on the little stretch of road that used to lead into the lot, now cracked and blocked from traffic by those big plastic barriers. The lot itself is ensconced in chain link fence and construction cloth, with this small piece of defunct roadway butting uselessly up against it.

There were only a few people there, maybe 9 or 10, scattered amidst the weeds and convulsing to the powerful thump of house music. A DJ booth was crammed against the fence, flashing a few meager green and blue lights into the milky night air. Masked revelers dipped in an out of headlight beams, circling each other at a distance or gyrating alone with eyes closed and faces raised to the sky. From a distance they looked like strange flowers, like this unlikely celebration might have grown out of the pavement itself.
