TUNES // Stella Donnelly – Old Man

Posted on Jan 19, 2019By Misha

On this morning of the third annual Women’s March and the recent controversy surrounding it, I’m thinking a lot about leaderless movements. Heroes are great for comic books, but in this world it is important for our leaders to be disposable, just another character in the grander struggle towards a better future.

Stella Donnelly captured my heart last year with a heart wrenching song about abuse and seeking justice called Boys Will Be Boys. Old Man is a sharp tongued rebuke to the men who refuse accountability. Witty and acerbic, she points out, “Your personality traits don’t count if you put your dick in someone’s face.”

Our movement is not a monument to individuals, but a patchwork of ideas, and art, and action – books, songs, television, Medium essays, twitter personalities, teacher strikes, acts of love in the face of darkness. That’s what I’m thinking about today.

Stella Donnelly‘s debut album, Beware Of The Dogs, will be released on March 8. Preorder it here. She also has a US tour coming up and will be playing LA with Faye Webster on April 6, which I am extremely excited about. Check dates here.
