One of my favorite things in the world is seeing kids on the street learning to skateboard. Scabs on their knees and scuffs on their shoes, practicing clumsy kickflips and ollies with their friends, they strike me as so brave and unprepared.

It’s clear that they want so badly to have a thing, and be good at it, and have a place in the world. Something in the hunch of their shoulders says that they will chase that thing to the end, no matter how many times they have to fall down for it.

The other day I was driving to work, listening to this song in the car, and I got stuck behind about five kids skating through the neighborhood. They looked like a flock of earthbound birds, gliding along according to some internal formation. Then they dipped over a hill and were gone.
