TUNES // Slothrust – Peach

this song starts in a free fall. lyrics by free association, which i love. trying out words to see how they taste, how they feel in the mouth.

chupacabra. i try to remember what that is. an animal, right? south american? mythological? real? can’t remember.

sandbox. i had a sandbox when i was a child. filled with river sand hauled up from the beach in the back of an old pickup truck. why do kids love that so much? making shape piles out of glorified dirt.

peach. schnapps. i hate that that’s the first thing i think of, not sun filled orchards or georgia or picking them from the tree right before the first frost of the year.

that, and how i always feel sad in grocery stores picking out peaches, pressing my fingers all over them, leaving dusty little dents in their soft bodies, next to the little dents that other people’s fingers made before moving on to an even softer fruit.

when the chorus lands it is fully formed, dragonlike, breathing fire. a huge, pulsing nuclear cloud in the moments after reaching its full mushroomed potential. the moment before it dissipates. the moment before it folds into itself. the moment before it is bit into, dripping juice hot as napalm.
