TUNES // Love You Later – Harder On Myself

We drive to the grocery store after work, my best friend and I – the same grocery store where we used to buy pizza bites and peanut butter and margarita mix in college. We are there to fall into old habits. With our most serious faces we debate the merits of Malbecs versus Bordeauxs before choosing a seven dollar red blend.

We can’t decide what kind of ice cream we want, so we get a lot more than we had planned. But hey we’re not kids anymore; we have real people jobs and money and a line of credit now. Plus, there’s a deal on Ben & Jerry’s if you buy more than five.

We open them all up back home, sitting on the floor. Two spoons and a little good old fashioned heartbreak, reaching over each other, trading in new secrets and old wounds.

I wonder how many times I have done this, or how many more times I will do this.

It’s something about the ritual, I guess, that’s tough to give up. Sad pop songs over laptop speakers. Hunting for the last chunk of cookie dough in a puddle of sweet cream. The hushed, conspiratorial sacredness of living out a teen movie trope.

Anyway this song came on and I thought about all the good ways to be opened up and scooped out.
