TUNES // Your Smith – Bad Habit

In my first days walking around the streets of Brooklyn since moving here last week, it seems like every song that comes into my headphones is set to the rumbling warmth of Los Angeles freeways.

This one came on late on a drizzling night where the wetness of the air refracts the yellow street lamps. I was drawn in by its carefree heat, and the whispery closeness of the vocals on the other end, which have the timbre of pillow talk.

Apparently Caroline Smith (of Your Smith) wrote this song after moving to LA and that makes sense to me. It’s the type of LA music that is full of openness and excitement. There is, quite unexpectedly, a rather Kygo-esque hook in the chorus that catches the ear and won’t let go.

It’s set to rain in New York for the next few days. I’ve been making Your Smith walk with me to work every day, picking whispers of sunshine out of the steam coming from subway grates and huddles of friends walking under the same umbrella.

Bad Habit is available to stream on all platforms, along with Your Smith’s newest album, Wild Wild Woman. Buy Bad Habit on vinyl here.
