What I notice first about ‘Bite’ is its dancing heartbeat, which skips and pauses in all the right places. For some reason I think about those videos where you’re watching POV from the perspective of someone taking the outstretched hand of a companion and then it smash cuts to the same shot but in new, exotic locations. The idea being, basically, that you the viewer are being led by the hand from adventure to adventure.

Those videos usually come packaged with cheerful, upbeat music, which I always thought was strange because following someone wherever they go is inherently a little bit terrifying.

Perhaps the image comes to mind with this song because even though there’s a good measure of fear, there’s also the sense that we will be on this ride until it stops. There’s that same tethered vision that only allows us to see the outstretched hand of whatever is pulling us through the world, and not the destination we are pitching ourselves into.

The song winds its way into the world, dark and sparkling. It pulses tide-like and finds an ocean with a bright moon to swim out to. It ends in a tunnel of jellied synths, drenched and hungry.
