GracieHorse // What I’m Missing

Every year, there are a couple of days where it becomes impossible to ignore that things are shifting. Usually around March and October, give or take a little depending on your latitude. For some people, I assume this time is welcomed with the sense of relief. The first premonitions of summer poking through after months of dreariness. A new chill in the air at the exact moment that you’re sure you can’t possibly sweat any more.

Or, if you’re like me, maybe you’ve never quite learned to trust a change in the seasons. Maybe you wander around for weeks in strange clothes, apparently having forgotten how to dress for a different temperature. Maybe you’ve misplaced the box with all your short sleeve shirts. Maybe you are suddenly overcome with the vague panic of having unfinished business. Maybe you’re not ready to put the big quilt on the bed away. Maybe you like the big quilt. Maybe you try to reason with yourself. Remember last summer, you tell yourself (maybe). Remember last time this happened and everything was fine and normal again in like two weeks tops? And recall that in fact last time you were wishing to stay in the very season that you now are so anxious to keep at bay? A bit silly, no?

But these reasonable admonitions never work on me. I’m a Southern California girl at heart and I know that nothing at all has to change, least of all the weather.
