Smerz // Feisty

This thing lives right up on the line between fun and scary. You think a bunch of times that it’s going to drop down into either one or the other (are we having a Good Time or are we having a Bad Time?) but it never really does because sometimes the answer to that question is just yes.
The title of this album is Big city life and honestly I’ve never heard anything more perfectly tuned to the general vibe of my personal experience of the city in my 20s. Big prominent thumps of what sounds like it should definitely be a full stop Good Time, but which at the last minute turn out to be something a little more queasy than that. Like we’re never more than a drunken stumble away from things going terribly wrong, or terribly right. Throw a layer of heavy-lidded drollness in there, a little middle-fingers-up cute, and you’ve got a tone poem worthy of every worst and best night out you’ve ever half remembered in the cold light of day.
Buy the track / pre-order the album here. Out via Escho.
