Men I Trust – Equus Caballus

Last weekend we drove over to Olympia for a day. Olympia is the kind of mid-size town where there is not one or even two but three bookstores with radical politics within a few minutes walk of each other. Also: a bunch of thrift stores and flea markets, a combo synth and plant shop, a year round farmer’s market, and lampposts covered thickly with hand-drawn fliers. A thriving zine culture. In short: my kind of town. I came home with too many new books, per usual. My partner bought a mug from the synth / plant shop that has a drawing of a piano tucked in a field of flowers.

The northern latitude has been stretching our days out like taffy. We ate ice cream and then drove home in the 9pm twilight. I was wearing a new dress I had bought earlier in the day. My shoulders tingling with the afterwarmth of a mild sunburn. The blue-green trees were nodding in a friendly and protective on either side of the highway.

It’s an achievement, I think, for an album to be both very comfortable and very interesting. To have it feel so much like sinking back and closing your eyes after a long day in the sun, but without ever losing its aliveness, its ability to surprise. That’s a rare quality. Anyway, I put this album on on the drive home and it was the most perfect thing.
