It poured rain all night and well into the morning. My usual straight shot freeway route to work was going nowhere so I pulled off onto the soggy streets, following a zig zagging blue line on my phone while dodging fallen palm fronds and overnight rivers carrying a murky tea of Los Angeles street sweat out to sea.

The red numbers counting minutes to my destination kept going up, the route becoming more and more circuitous until I found myself in an area I didn’t recognize, though it can’t have been more than a few miles from my apartment. Pastel pink awnings advertised budget cell phone carriers and panaderias I could smell through the rain. One of those burger joints with giant photos lit to make the food seem much worse than it probably is. Brick buildings with ornate fire escapes. Neighbors waiting for buses with warm pan dulce under their arm.

A few bleary still-lifes taken from intersections, and then I hit La Brea, heading north along familiar territory. Nothing like this city to remind me that am forever a visitor of worlds.

Buy the dreamy Kingston hereFaye Webster‘s self titled album was one of my favorites of 2017 and now she’s back with her first single since signing to Secretly Canadian.
